VERMONT ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
SECONDARY EDUCATION SCIENCE RESEARCH GRANTS
Daniel J. Bean Science Research Grants
The VAAS and the AAAS (Am. Assoc. for Adv. of Science) have money available to support original science research by Vermont high school students during the academic year. The purpose of the grants is to provide support for either new research projects or to help current projects reach a fruitful conclusion. The money must be used for supplies and small equipment, not salaries, travel, food, stipends, major equipment or other non-research items.
Grants will be awarded for up to $500 each. Criteria for evaluating the proposal will include: Number of students involved, quality of the proposal, potential for successful conclusion, demonstrated knowledge of the research to be undertaken, design of the experiment. Preference will be given to good quality proposals involving more than one student.
Final evaluation of the outcome will include: Design of the experiment, effort demonstrated, interpretation of the data and conclusions, quality of the final report (including references used), teacher’s written evaluation, and results of site visits by VAAS members (where and when feasible).
It is expected that final reports will be presented at the Vermont State Science Fair and the spring Student Intercollegiate Symposium of the VAAS. (This is optional if these are before completion of project, in which case the presentation might be made the next year.) A final written report must be submitted to VAAS, together with a final budget expenditure (with receipts) statement.
Requests for a grant are to be submitted by the supervising teacher and include the names of the students (if possible) or indicate number of students involved. The grant will be awarded to the teacher’s school for use by the teacher.
All reports, publicity, and publications should credit the VAAS and AAAS.
